The CRC report on the cinema: with its films produced in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais, the region is nearly always out-of-pocket.

By co-producing regional films, the Regional Centre of Audiovisual Resources (Nord-Pas-de-Calais) hopes to see a return on its investment. A report of the Regional Audit Chamber published last July confirms that the association, largely financed by the Regional Council, rarely sees its Easter Eggs hatch.

Roubaix: Model town for integration in the eyes of the United States

It’s the first time that the much-reputed New York Times has given a whole page to…the City of Roubaix! A complete report for the most part in praise of the integration model for the city’s Muslims (click here to read the article in English). Entitled, “A French Town Bridges the Gap between Muslims and Non-Muslims”, the article goes on to speak of a successful melting pot, an example to follow. In short, the complete opposite of the urban violence that we witnessed around the police station in Trappes the night of 20 to 21 July earlier this year…The counter-example, is it an oversimplification? Surely so. The article, picked up on by the Voix du Nord certainly provoked lively reactions (click here  to see the pay per view article). Finally, by confusing interculturality and religion, the very Anglo-Saxon journalist neglected perhaps the principle of secularism. “Roubaix is one of just a handful of cities that have broken with a rigid interpretation of the country’s state secularism. The city stands out for its effort to take discreet but pointed steps to promote an active Muslim community”, the journalist reports. In the eyes of the United-States, Roubaix is Noddy Land… Lire cet article

Petit Futé, Routard, Guide Vert: we’ve read and compared these tourist guidebooks on the Nord – Pas-de-Calais

GOOD READING. Guide Vert (Michelin), Routard, Petit Futé. These are certainly the best-known guidebooks in France (except for Lonely Planet). All three have an edition for the Nord - Pas-de-Calais (*). For you, future tourists, who are going to invade the region in masses this summer, and for you, local inhabitants, on the lookout for top tips, we've compared these three publications. Somewhat subjectively.

“At Salah’s”, the Roubaix café is still behind the barricades

WHAT WILL BECOME OF IT? “At Salah’s”. A café that caused quite a “stir” two years ago. Located slap bang in the middle of a zone earmarked for demolition, its owner stubbornly refuses to part. Today, Salah Oujdane still hasn’t thrown in the dishcloth. An act of resistance that has attracted empathy and which is portrayed as a model as featured in a recent documentary which won a prize in Algeria. Lire cet article

Along our vanished borders (10/20): 24 hours at Saugeais, the zany border republic

One of the rare appointments made during our voyage along our vanished borders. 'Cos we didn't want to miss out on this. A strange border republic survives at the French-Swiss border. Almost independent. Its name? The Republic of Saugeais. A special day in the life of a reporter.

A few arguments for skeptics to get to know Dunkirk 2013 (according to press reviews)

A few arguments for skeptics to get to know Dunkirk 2013 (according to press reviews)

After Valenciennes and Béthune, it's now the turn of a new city to become the regional capital of culture for 2013. Dunkirk all the way from the 06 April until the 28 December. Great, but many people have never heard of this label, or worse, don't give a damn. Luckily, in today's world, there is such a thing as 'communication'. And press reviews. Full of arguments for us plebs to come and get a bit of culture right in the middle of a SEVESO site. Enough to convince any skeptic.

What is most important? What our politicians inherit… or what we hope to inherit from them?

Your attention please, current news spiced up by DailyNord. Thanks to the Cahuzac affair, the Republic's powers-that-be have been forced to publicly publish their 'patrimony'. Frédéric Cuvillier's Moroccan style Marrakech mansion or the Prime Minister's conked out camping-car: is it of any interest and reassuring to us? We doubt it. Perhaps it would be better if we were to take a look at our slice of the patrimonial cake, our national heritage in our politicians' safe keep…. or not. Because, if they can't work magic, we can't expect too much of them. So keeping a close eye on them is not voyeurism, but the legitimate duty of every citizen when it's a question of who or what might have an undesirable effect on the structural and financial wealth of a community
