You couldn’t have missed it. Dany Boon’s latest film has just come out. Eyjafjallajökull, the story of the Icelandic volcano, a marriage and a hyperactive couple (in brief). But according to the figures coming in, in spite of its number one box-office ranking this week, the forecast is rather pessimistic (compared to “Welcome to the Sticks” and “Nothing to Declare“* of course). DailyNord explains objectively to you the errors of our Master.
Reason no.1: a bad choice of location
Why didn’t Dany Boon produce his film on familiar northern turf rather than fluttering around in various European countries? If he had filmed here, he would have benefited from an optimal media coverage (as commented by at least four local news editorials) and free publicity. And in a region with 4 million inhabitants, that carries weight.
Reason no.2: no accent
Dany Boon does not use his local vernacular in this film: no Ch’ti accent, not even a little Belgium one. And yet the title of the film was promising (Eyjafjallajökull, what an idea…) with the add-on “…The Volcano’”. Dany slipped up.
Reason no.3: a complicated storyline
This is where things really start to go wrong. The storyline is far too complicated! A divorced couple, a child… Dany Boon is not known for such intrigues (sarcasm)
Reason no.4: everything is relative
If we take a close look, the film is, after all, number one at the box office and lots of (other) directors would love to be in Dany’s shoes. But obviously, after Welcome to the Sticks with its 21 million entries, Eyjafjallajökull is a disaster.
Reason no.5: Dany has distanced himself from his public
Have you read the synopsis? “For travellers around the world, the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull, the Icelandic volcano, is a hard blow” For travellers around the world? The local Ch’ti touch is sorely missing. Moreover, Dany has lost sight of his fan audience who rarely travel and have never flown in their lives.
(*) According to France 3 Nord – Pas-de-Calais 545,928 entries in a week, in other words the number one film at the box office. But according to forecasts, the film will not reach 1.5 million entries, while it needs at least 3 million to make a profit.
